NVR storage calculator

Plan disk capacity from bitrate, not megapixel marketing. The result updates immediately and adds practical headroom.

Adjust the measured average bitrate when you have it. The resolution preset is only a planning starting point.

Continuous recording estimate using decimal storage units. Recorder overhead, drive formatting, audio, secondary streams, VBR scene changes and RAID reduce usable capacity.

METHOD

How is CCTV storage calculated?

Multiply the total video bitrate by recording time, then convert bits to bytes. This tool assumes every camera records continuously: cameras × Mb/s × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8. It then multiplies by retention days and adds 20% planning headroom.

Why should you replace the preset bitrate?

Resolution does not determine storage by itself. Codec, frame rate, shutter noise, movement, foliage, rain and the camera encoder all change the result. Measure representative day and night bitrate on the intended settings, then enter that average here.

What should be tested before purchase?

Confirm the recorder’s usable bays and maximum drive size, supported drive list, RAID loss, incoming-bandwidth limit and export performance. Retention is a policy: record a controlled event near the oldest footage and prove that it remains playable and exportable.
